Our Favourite Shows — Showy Danza Episode 7

To honour baseball playoffs, we’re throwing you a curveball: Instead of reviewing TV that’s really bad — or so bad it’s good — we’re talking about shows that, you know, are actually fun to watch.

There are some obvious picks, but Dan MacRae, Christi Olson and Dan Yates also defend some schlock: Saturday Night Live, That’s My Bush, Life on Mars and Medium (for reasons more elaborate than, “Hey, that’s the most tolerable Arquette”).

Hot in Cleveland — Showy Danza Episode 6

Hot in ClevelandIt’s pretty hard to hate Hot in Cleveland, an original series brought to us by TV Land (the same channel that taught me about Green Acres and Maude in the late 1990s). Do you like things from the past? Hey, remember those shows you used to love? Hot in Cleveland hopes you do. The show will appeal to two kinds of nostalgic crowds: fans of the ’90s and fans of the late ’00s (Betty White, yo).

Everyone in this show has done something you liked: Golden Girls, Frasier, Just Shoot Me, Van Halen … And, while it’s not necessarily great, it doesn’t fail loudly. It turns out what was delightful then remains charming now (and it’s aging quite gracefully). Hey, if Betty White is comfortable with her dead husband returning from the grave, I’m willing to go along for the ride.

Christi Olson, Dan MacRae and Dan Yates talk about that and other shocking plot twists (Did somebody say zany marriage?) in this week’s (revived) podcast.

Drop Dead Diva — Showy Danza Episode 5

drop dead divaWe’re talking about Drop Dead Diva on this week’s Showy Danza.

What kind of a show is Drop Dead Diva? Christi Olson offers an astute description: thick chicks and camp. That sounds like fun — and it is!

Dan MacRae and Dan Yates join Olson in the discussion, which includes two burps and one brain fart.

Osbournes: Reloaded — Showy Danza Episode 4

reloaded

We’re talking about Osbournes: Reloaded on the show this week. You haven’t seen it before and for good reason. It’s awful. It’s so bad you’ll wish Kelly Osbourne had stuck with music and Jack Osbourne had focused his energy on getting so skinny that he started to Benjamin Button, aging backwards into a tiny British fetus. It’s also a variety show.

Christi Olson joins Dan MacRae and Dan Yates in the discussion, which includes three honest laughs and one meltdown. That’s a bargain at the cost of free!

There are a few technical glitches in the show. Yates screwed up while editing and, subsequently, the audio isn’t great. Occasionally, everyone sounds like a robot. I could fix it — woops, I broke the fourth wall — but I’ve got other things to do (I just reached the ‘repeat’ part of the ‘binge-purge-repeat’ cycle). Hey, I’m learning …

Please cover any open cuts or sores, we’re going to be wading through a bit of variety show poo this week. On our next show, we’ll be tackling Osbournes Reloaded. Care to watch it? We have the premiere (and only aired) episode embedded here on our Tumblr.

Hang Time — Showy Danza Episode 3

Hang timeIn Episode 3 of Showy Danza, we learn an important lesson about HIV/AIDS in “a very special episode” of Hang Time and debate the legacy of a TNBC show that’s not Saved by the Bell.

Christi Olson joins Dan MacRae and Dan Yates in the discussion which includes only one reference to professional wrestling. It’s our best episode yet.

Celebrating schlock culture since July 2011.

Cop Rock — Showy Danza #2

Cop Rock

Cop Rock was TV’s first (and likely only) police procedural musical. It’s kind of like Hill Street Blues meets Grease meets Dallas meets your patience … and it’s not that bad. It’s actually kind of fun. Dan MacRae and Dan Yates tell you why in Episode 2 of Showy Danza.

Aliens in the Family — Showy Danza #1

Aliens in the Family

Showy Danza is a podcast about tripe TV, canceled sitcoms and relics of TGIF.

In Episode 1, Dan MacRae and Dan Yates break down Aliens in the Family — the forgotten alien Brady Bunch from ABC’s 1996 TGIF lineup — and begin to delve into AITF (yeah, we’re starting that) fan fiction. That’s real and not just included here for the creepy dozens searching the web for foam rubber erotica.
